Review: Whites Metal Detector, Prizm 6T

I have always wanted to buy myself an expensive metal detector, but never had the money to invest in such a hobby. My interest in metal detectors began at the age of 11 when I was given a really cheap model for Christmas. The metal detector was fun, but it did not work well at all.

2 weeks ago Amazon for some reason decided to recommend a metal detector to me, in the 'your recommendations' section.

I did not want the one Amazon recommended, but after being recommended a metal detector, I wanted one, and I knew exactly what brand. Whites.

Whites metal detectors are one of the best recommended brands of metal detectors out there. They are pricey, yes, but for damn good reasons. They work the best, and they have, hands down, the absolute best warranty out there.

I scanned through the available models on the Whites website (click to be taken there). I did not know which model to get at the time, so I decided to browse through the stories section of the site, and here I found pages and pages of Whites metal detector users. Not only were these people sharing their finds, they were also posting spectacular photos of their find; from diamond rings, school rings, and other precious metals.

At that moment, I knew without a doubt I was getting a Whites Detector. I wanted a piece of that pie, and I wanted it now.

I cruised the site further and discovered a Whites Metal Detector dealer was just a few towns over from where I lived, so directly after work, I went in and bought a Whites Prizm 6T Metal Detector.
The dealer was helpful, and recommended this model to me. I was new to the hobby, so I did not want to spend mega bucks on a detector till I knew if I would like it or not. I figured at the mid range price the Prizm 6T was, it was a good start.

The Prizm 6T is normally $599.95, but they were running a $100 off sale on the model, so I picked it up for $499.95.

Features:

The features on the Prizm 6T were all really impressive, with ways to discard junk metals, a beach mode which makes finding treasures on the beach a lot easier, a depth indicator that will tell you how deep down your treasure is, a waterproof 9 inch spider coil, tone ID which will chime a different tone depending on the type of the metal. This feature is neat for when you get used to the detector, you won't really have to look at the screen to know exactly what type of metal you found.

The Automatic Ground Balance will eliminate minerals in the ground, making it easier and faster to target only metals you want to dig up.

The screen will pin point exactly what metal you have found, so you know if you want to dig for it or not. The detector will also ring louder depending on how close you are to the target.

You can also adjust the sensitivity. You can pin point exactly where your target is by using the P/P All Metals mode. There is also a back light that you can power on by holding down the on off button for a longer period of time before powering it on. This is cool for if you are hunting at night, or in darker environments.

Everything on the detectors faceplate is really simple to use which is great for beginners. Click here to view, and enlarge the faceplate and see the Prizm 6T's exact set up.

Whites will also cover your detector with a 2 year warranty, which is simply spectacular, a company that stands by their product. I was not worried at all when I bought it.

My Use:

By the time I got home night had fallen, but I was so giddy with excitement, that I first watched the included DVD, which showed me how to set the Prizm 6T up. The instructions are really simple, and require nothing but simple snap and click into place instructions.

After I had my detector put together, I went outside to put it to use.

Immediately I was picking up on beeps, which would immediately indicate what was in the ground. I knew I was standing over buried pipes, so the initial test worked like a charm.

Next I skimmed through the yard and got a nice strong signal 4 inches down. I dug down into the ground, and within a few moments I was holding in my hand a penny. I was impressed, very impressed.

Granted I never worked so hard for a penny in my life, finding it within seconds of using my Whites Prizm 6T, I was impressed. I could not wait to get it to the beach.

Beach:

Bringing my Prizm 6T to the beach was exactly what I initially wanted the detector for. I powered on the metal detector, hit beach mode, and happily went scanning the shore line, and beach.

I picked up a lot of bottle caps, and cans, so I discarded the junk metal settings, and quickly found a nickle, followed by a dime, 4 pennies, and a quarter.

All of this in an hour. I know 44 cents is not much, but I did not travel very far to find them, and I only stood at the beach for about an hour till dusk fell.

I know with enough practice, and enough man hours I will eventually find my first piece of jewelery.

Overall:

The Whites Prizm 6T is an excellent detector in my opinion. It won't break your bank, and it works like a charm. It picks up on metals, pin points them, tells me how deep down they are. The best thing about the Whites Prizm 6T is that I actually dropped a few pounds just in 2 weeks due to the excess work I am now doing. My arms in particular are more tone than they have ever been. Even though the 6T weighs just a few pounds, you will see and feel a difference in just a few short days of using it.

Eventually you will get used to it, and the detector will feel virtually weightless.
