Movie Review: Fido

I had walked past Fido numerous times at my local rental spot. I took a look at the DVD picture and always assumed it was a low budget Night of the Living Dead Flick.

After getting hold of a few reviews though, I couldn't wait to get back to Blockbuster to give it a rent.
Fido takes place in the 50's...a war in the past broke out between the dead and the living, that war was humans against zombies. However now with Zomcor's new way of containing zombies, the living dead now can be kept under control by placing a metal neck device onto their necks. The device controls them, and gets them to do what you want. However if the neck device's red light goes off, it means the zombie has free will....and when a zombie has free will....they kill.

Little Timmy Robinson was probably the only kid on the block that did not have a zombie yet, you see his father fears zombies, so they never got one for their home. However one day mommy Robinson brings one home, because she feels they are abnormal seeing how they are the only ones in town without one.

Timmy is introduced to the zombie, which he eventually calls Fido, which makes sense seeing how he treats him like a furry 4 legged pet at first. Fido becomes friendly with Timmy, and protects him from bullies at school.

However while walking Fido without a leash, his neck brace goes dead, and Fido is unleashed as the flesh eating zombie he always was. He attacks a pesky neighbor, which eventually wakes up as the living dead, and creates a mini outbreak of killings and loose zombies.

A few scenes later we realize that Fido has warmed up to the Robinson's, because his neck brace goes off and he does not harm them; where normally a zombie would devour everything in it's path.

When the founder of Zomcor (who conveniently lives next door) figures out that Fido is responsible for the outbreak of killings and zombies, he takes him away to have him destroyed.

Naturally this breaks Timmy's heart, and Timmy's mothers, who also grew close to Fido. Timmy gets help from a fellow neighbor in getting Fido back, once they hear he is still alive.

I won't spoil the rest of the flick, but I will say that Fido was an extremely odd, yet charming zombie movie. The flick portrayed zombies in a way they have never been seen before, and as unbelievable as the plot was, it still kept me glued to the tube from start to finish.

I adored the way the film was done. A gorgeous 50's setting, where everything appeared to be from another era, made the time the movie was trying to portray seem more realistic. My boyfriend was in awe over the classic cars that drove through the streets every now and then.

It was like Pleasantville meets Night of the Living Dead. Very cool; very strange.

Overall:

Fido is an awesome zombie flick. There was not a single period where I was yawning or wanting to hit fast forward. I was expecting a cheesy low budget flick, but Fido delivered.
4.5 stars out of 5 from me.
