Wide-i LLC Scuba Snorkel / Mask Fog Wiper: Review - In
approximately 2 months my boyfriend and I are taking our first
international vacation over to the Bahama's. Our weekly schedule
includes the following, snorkel, relax on beach, snorkel, swim with
dolphins, snorkel, snorkel, and more snorkel...
We made our way to a
local dive and pool shop to purchase masks, and made out way to the pool
to try them out. We did the toothpaste rinse and baby shampoo rinse
which was recommended to me on so many websites, however as good as it
worked on keeping fog away, it was not perfect. Fog became an issue
about an hour into having the masks on, and I knew I didn't want this to
be an ongoing issue when we were on vacation.
I went on a crazy rapid online search for a solution. Numerous sites
offered rinse solutions to keep fog away, but I had a feeling they'd
likely work as well as toothpaste and baby shampoo.
Then as if the stars had pointed me in the right direction I came across a very odd new invention on Amazon.com. Fog wipers!!! What the deuce!?!?!
My first observation and I was impressed, because I knew something this simple would work before even buying them. I had an old fish tank set that came with these itty magnets. One magnet went on the inside of the tank, and the other on the outside for you to push around. Doing this allowed me to clean the fish tank of any dirt and grime...basically these Fog Wipers would do the same thing... and I just knew it would work!
The wipers are simply called Wide-i, LLC Scuba Snorkel/Mask Fog Wiper. For $6.99 I placed an order on one wiper. I didn't need two because my mask was a single panel mask. Those who have double panels; order two!
Appearance:
Literately 3 days after placing my order a little yellow envelope from the company showed up at my door. Inside were my Fog Wipers! They are basically small round white magnetic discs. A little bit larger than a aspirin pill.
One thinner disc is meant to go on the inside of the mask, and the larger one on the outside. My first worry was that the magnets would scratch my mask! After removing the magnetic discs though I came to realize that the magnet was coated with a felt type cloth to prevent scratching! Worry number 1, solved! No need to worry about scratching! Cool beans!
My next worry was whether or not they would hold on tight to my mask. I know they were cheap, but I didn't want to loose them in the water while snorkeling.
No worries here though. I placed the thinner disc on the inside of the mask, and the larger disc on the outside. The magnets made a nice strong bond, but at the same time the bond was loose enough as to where I could push the magnets around without a battle.
My Use:
The next test of course was to see how well it worked at combating fog on my mask.
I got in the pool with my magnets already on my mask. I swam around for a bit and waited for fog to form usually. As soon as the fog sprang up, I grabbed hold of the magnetic disc, and wiped it all around!
Well hot diggity dog! The Wide-i, LLC Scuba Snorkel/Mask Fog Wiper solved the fog issue in seconds! It was seriously the neatest little simplistic mask tool I have ever seen! What a concept!
There was really though nothing cooler than seeing my boyfriend swim around, then pop up with a foggy mask. He then took the magnet slid it across the fog, and wallah, I could see his eyes again!
I only ordered one Wide-i, LLC Scuba Snorkel/Mask Fog Wiper, but I'm heading back to the site before our trip to order a few more pairs.
One word of advise though would be not to flush your mask with these magnets on them! I ended up loosing the bond when I did this for some reason. i imagine the rushing water was too tough on the bond.
Seeing how you wont need to flush because the magnets are so reliable... it won't be an issue, but I figured I'd just warn you in case.
Overall:
This is the best mini investment I have ever made. I highly highly recommend this product to those who dive a lot, or snorkel a lot and cannot stand fog! These little wipers take away the fog while you swim.
