I usually purchase books based off of cool looking covers. I know the
old saying about not judging a book by its cover, but hey, I have always
bought books based off of the cover, and I rarely am disappointed by my
choices.
I bought If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince?
by Melissa Kantor, based off of the cute cover, and the fact that the
books setting would be taking place on Long Island; where your's truly
was born and raised.
There was no way I could deny this book. It spoke to me before I even
began reading it. Plus it had a title that I think many young girls
could relate to.
The book starts off like any typical modern Cinderella story.
A young girl named Lucy is recently re-located to Long Island to live
with her father, her new stepmother, and her two obnoxious younger step
sisters.
Instead of being warmly welcomed into her new home, Lucy's new vile
stepmother tosses her down into the basement and calls it her room.
Unfurnished, dark, dank, and small Lucy is left with no other choice,
and oddly enough her stupid father seems to think that his daughters
basement room is fine for now, and that her stepmother will take her out
to furnish the room as soon as possible.
Unfortunately Lucy's room goes untouched for weeks, with no furniture and no place to put her clothing and belongings.
With the ridiculous basement room aside, Lucy does not to be all too
tortured like I expected her to be. Lucy does however seem to be blamed
for ridiculous things, and instead of her father taking her side, he
takes the side of his new wife, and new daughters.
Instead of being a normal rebellious teenager, Lucy just takes whatever they dish which I thought was stupid.
Lucy finds a love interest though at her new school, and oddly enough he really seems to like her and the two begin dating.
Little to her knowledge early on, this new boyfriend just does not
seem to be Lucy's Prince. In fact Lucy's real prince is a lot closer
than she thinks and comes from someone she least expects to be her
Prince.
My Feelings:
If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince? turned out to be a
decent book, but I was expecting it to be darker than it was. I expected
the main character to suffer a lot more than she did. The only real
pain she endures is the fact that her father sort of neglects her in the
beginning of the book when they first moved in to the new house. Her
basement non-furnished room was another downside; aside from that though
the sibling rivalry that occurred is nothing short of normal.
The book has the same Cinderella happy ending that one would expect,
however getting from point A to point B took awhile, and drama in
between was somewhat repeated which got boring. Lucy gets blamed for
something, Lucy get grounded, Lucy gets blamed for something, Lucy gets
grounded.
Would I recommend the book?
Sure!
Even with the lack of any real horrendous events, the book was still a
fast and easy read, and likely will be enjoyed by anyone who picks it
up to give it a shot.
Plus, who doesn't like a happy ending?
