Video Game Review: Ratatouille for Playstation 3

I've always been so against movies made to video games. I always have found that these titles will suck the big one, and for the most part, nearly 90% of all movies made to game, have been horrible in my opinion. Recently though I bought myself a Playstation 3, and with a lack of girly titles, which is my favorite game genre, I found myself drawn to Ratatouille. I had already seen the movie, and it was pretty cute. I figured the game would be cute too. Me steering the pint sized rat Remy.

For those who haven't seen the flick, Ratatouille is about a Rat who teams up with a kid named Linguini. This kid works at a restaurant, but he is an awful cook. Remy though, who knows how to cook like a top chef, helps this goofy kid make master meals. Remy's dream though has always been to be a well known top chef, and having to hide himself makes exposure impossible, especially when Linguini takes all of Remy's credit. (Without ruining the movie though, let me continue with the game).

Ratatouille for Playstation 3 appeared to be a fun game on the box cover. When popped the disc into my console though, the game told a different story, and it was immediate that I realized this.

First of all, you won't understand the plot unless you have seen the actual movie. The games plot cuts the actual plot up so much that it's actually confusing on what the point of the game is.

The beginning starts of in an environment that is very familiar to the movie, but once you get started you'll wonder why it is happening, and what the actual point it.

I began my mission with my fat rat brother. I basically had to follow him around a yard while he gave me a short verbal tutorial as we went along. Here you will learn how to hit with your tail, pick things up, walk ropes, jump, and so on. After this 10 minute tutorial I was then on my own... to do what?

I really didn't know what exactly I had to do, or what the mission even asked of me. I did know though that I had to collect these weird colored chips in order to move on to the next mission.

Walking around the yard and trying to obtain these chips at first was semi fun, but other chips are placed in the most awkward of places, and the lack of good controls makes it sometimes so frigging frustrating.

For instance, in one mission I had to shimmy across a rope to get to the colored chip. However before jumping over to the rope, I had to hit the O button before landing, otherwise I'd just fall. Then I had to balance him on the rope by tilting the PS3 remote. However I had to make sure I took my finger off of the O button, or I'd just fall. It took me around 6 tries to 'get it'.

Another huge issue that I recognized right away was jumping. At times I would try and get Remy to jump onto a box, but if I had him positioned too close to the box, he'd just do this retarded looking half jump, and get stuck. Having to repeatedly back up, before making a jump was just straight up annoying.

Ratatouille for Playstation 3 would have been a funner game had the controls been in check before releasing the game.

The rest of the game consists of more mind numbing missions, with bad controls, and a lack of a description on why you are even playing.

Graphics:

I wish I could say that the graphics were at least good. Sadly though since playing the PS3, Ratatouille has by far been the least graphical impressing game I have played.

Colors are rich and nice to look at, but everything else is bland, from environments to the actual characters, there is nothing that will stick out as eye poppingly gorgeous.

Music:

Tunes play lightly in the background. The tunes are not annoying; at least not that I am aware of. I however became so frustrated with the controls, that even if it were bad music, the bad game play may of made the music seem good.

The Good:

The rat is cute

The Bad:

-Controls are horrendous
-Lack of an understandable plot
-Graphics are weak
-Mindless missions

Overall:

Ratatouille may be able to fool children into thinking that it is a good game, but truly the controls are so difficult and glitchy, that the game will only annoy them in a matter of 40 minutes.

In my opinion, Ratatouille for Playstation 3 is one game that you may as well just leave on the shelf.
