A Review of the Logitech 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3

Gaming consoles for the past few years have gotten cheaper and cheaper when it comes to accessories they pack with these HIGH HIGH priced gaming machines!

It still boils my blood that you can go out, spend $500 or more on a new console, and the thing doesn't even come with a game, or a freaking second player controller. Nope...they expect you to go out and shell out $60.00 on a secondary controller. It sucks, but such is life in the world of business, and money making tactics. Besides, why include it for free...when we know they will just buy it?

It's enough to piss you off, but no matter how pissed you are, you still in turn end up shelling out the dough for a second controller.

I wanted to get another wireless SIXAXIS controller for my Playstation 3, but there was no way in heck I was spending close to $70 for such a thing!

So I went ahead and bought the Logitech - 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3. I wanted my boyfriend and I to be able to play the new Lego Indiana Jones game together. Plus the Logitech - 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3 only came to $19.99 on sale at Target, so we figured it was a hell of a lot better than spending more.

Appearance:

The Logitech - 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3 looks nothing like the original SIXAXIS Wireless controller that comes with the console. This controller is shaped more like some weird boomerang, and quite frankly I liked the shape. I figured it would be easier on the hands during long gaming sessions.

The shape of the controller is very different, but for the most part, buttons and control sticks are all located in the same spots. You have your thumb pads, triangle, circle, square, and X buttons all stashed comfortably on the right of the controller, and your D-Pad on the left.

The one thing missing though was the frigging middle PS logo button. Instead you have a Logitech logo, but it has no functions. Sort of sucks because you could use the PS3 controller to power up the console with just a press. The Logitech doesn't have this button, nor function (at least I'm not aware of it anyway).

Quality:

Now inside of the plastic packaging this looked like a killer controller. I liked it better than the original that came with the console. However it was a different story once I got it out of the package.

It felt very, very cheap. The plastic seemed very light, and made of cheap material. The D-Pad was also really clicky ticky junky feeling. The thumb pads seemed okay, but if you looked closely, you could see through the plastic into the thumb pads gears. Yikes! It would of been cool, if the remote didn't feel so poorly made.

The battery chamber is extremely annoying, clunky, it sticks out way too far, and your fingers rest on it, reducing your finger wiggling freedom.

Wireless & USB:

In order for the Logitech - 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3 to go wireless you first have to install the batteries into the controllers clunky plastic butt compartment. -I'll get into how much I hate this later.

After installing your battery's, you then have to plug the included USB stick into an available USB slot on your PS3. A lot of folks are hating on this controller because of that, but to be honest, I don't mind this feature at all. In fact, I like it better than having a charging wire hanging on the floor for the included controller.

Use:

The first thing that annoyed the hell out of me was the fact that the Logitech - 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3 makes itself the first player remote at all times. Its slightly annoying having to fix your controller settings every time you power up the machine.

Besides that though the controller worked really well....till I needed to use the motion SIXAXIS. There is none, and seeing how many titles for the PS3 call for the SIXAXIS motion, this controller is pretty dang useless unless you have a title that does not need SIXAXIS.

Overall:

The controller has far too many quirks. It likes to place itself as first player every time you power up, it takes batteries, there is no SIXAXIS, and the battery chamber sticks out way too far for long term comfortable use!

The sale price is worth it if you are considering a spare controller for non SIXAXIS games, however if you rely on SIXAXIS for gaming the sale price isn't even worth it.

The Logitech - 2.4GHz Wireless Controller for PlayStation 3 normally sells for $29.99. In my opinion it's not worth it even if you're using non SIXAXIS games.
