Recently my boyfriend and I booked out first international vacation; destination, Grand Bahama's.
The only thing we knew about the Grand Bahama's though was what hotel
we wanted to stay at. After looking up review after review online on
hotels on the island, we both agreed on the Wyndham.
Besides the perfect
hotel though, we had no clue what else the island had to offer, and
before hopping onto a plane we both wanted to know what Grand Bahama's
had to offer. From excursions to beaches, we wanted to know where they
were, and how far they were from our hotel. We wanted prices, and we
wanted ratings on them.
Off to our local library, I grabbed everything and anything that had
the word Bahama's on it, and in the large mix of travel guides, and
books I grabbed one called Frommer's 2008 Bahamas.
This travel guide not only has information on Grand Bahama's, but it
also is a guide for surrounding islands in the Bahama's as well. Seeing
how we were not going to be seeing any of the other islands in the
Bahama's we skipped to the exact destination island we would be staying.
Grand Bahama's.
Now I must say the guide was extremely helpful, with full photos on many of the pages.
We discovered some really neat excursions we hadn't known about, from
botanical gardens, dolphin swims and experience's, recommended
restaurant's, places to shop, and beaches that one MUST see while on the
island.
Everything was done up in order to make it easy for the reader to understand.
We hit however one major problem that sort of annoyed us both. Their
map of Grand Bahama's only focused on the western side of the island.
We loved the fact that all of the hotels were starred out on the map,
but seeing how our hotel (Viva Wyndham) was smack dab in the middle of
the island, towards the lower south, it was literately cut off of the
map that was included in the book. It was sort of disappointing not
being able to see where Frommer's 2008 Bahamas, had marked our hotel.
Weird too because there was a wonderful review regarding the hotel... only it wasn't pinned on the map.
With that one issue aside though, Frommer's 2008 Bahamas includes almost
all of it. From best beaches for snorkeling, diving, ship wreck diving,
kayaking, best restaurant's, horse back riding on the beach, boat
rides, events, and shopping destinations not to miss while vacationing
on the island.
The guide also offers phone numbers for you to book certain excursions.
Everything was relatively helpful in the guide, I would however loved
to of seen a full map of the entire island of Grand Bahama's.
With that said, I'd rate this one 4 out of 5 stars, and would
recommend you check it out at your local library if you are planning a
trip to the Grand Bahama's,or other surrounding islands in the Bahama's.
For those who want to purchase a copy, I'd recommend Border's stores,
or Border's website. The price is around $17.99. You can likely pick up a
used copy for less on Amazon though.
