I have tried viewing nearly every 8 Films To Die For movies since the
horror films first started releasing. Many of the films were pretty
lame, and occasionally there would be one decent one that was borderline
dumb, yet had some thrilling moments.
When I caught glimpse of Borderland at my local Blockbuster, I was assuming it would be another low budget Hills Have Eyes type flick. Only with more blood.
Immediately before viewing it I had it pegged as a lame ass movie.
However after popping the disc in I was taken for a wild, crazy,
sickening ride for the full duration of the flick.
First off what added to the horror factor is the fact that Borderland
is based on a true story. Knowing this makes the flick all the more
frightening, knowing that something like this could actually happen,
literately scared the jabbezus, out of me, and made me make a mental
note to never visit any small towns around the Mexican Border. Never
separate from my group while on vacation, and hell... just keep away
from local pubs and bars where bad things can go down.
For one of our characters in Borderland though, he was pegged the moment he stepped foot in town. There was no hope for him.
Anyhow, Borderland starts off introducing us to 3 friends who
apparently just finished school, and are taking a final vacation
together before splitting up to go on their separate life paths.
The boys quickly find themselves making friends with the locals in the
small Mexican town located on the Mexican Border. The 3 hit up the
local clubs, make out with local girls, and all around seem to be having
a kick ass time. The fun however, ends pretty abruptly.
During a festival in the town one of the friends decides to walk back
to the hotel on his own, leaving his other 2 friends behind.
Little to his knowledge, this small town is the home not only to fun
local pubs and festivals, but it is also the home of a huge drug ring
with many sick demented drug members...and of course the head honcho of
the drug ring.
This however is no ordinary drug ring though, this ring consists of a
sick cult like clan where the members of this cult kill, and sacrifice
humans in order to make themselves invisible while going about their
illegal activities involving drugs and smuggling.
Little to his knowledge, he becomes the prime target to this cult.
They want him as a sacrifice to the demon they worship. What makes it
all the more sickening, is that this cults leader wants an American- as if it would please his demon all the more.
The young man sets out alone back to his hotel making him all the more vulnerable.
The young man is abducted, and now his 2 friends are on the prowl to
finding him. During their hunt though they have run ins with these
members. Sadly the two are unaware that these strange men following them
around and intimidating them are actually a gang of drug
dealers/smugglers, nor are they aware of the ritualistic killings until
they dig deeper into who these men are.
I won't give away the ending, but I will say this. Borderland is a
flick that will scare the hell out of you. The ritualistic killings are
gruesome, realistic, and leave you feeling sickened.
The actors all do a wonderful job at portraying their characters.
Nothing stood out as fake, or bad. The entire movie was nothing but
sheer terror from start to finish. The text ending featuring real life
newspaper articles really embeds into your mind and makes Borderland all
the more frightening.
Definitely check this movie out. It is by far one of the best films in the 8 Films To Die For collections.
The flick had such a sorrowful impact on me that I actually was able to dig up news articles about this particular case. Click here to read actual articles on the killings that occurred.
