I used to love Magic Pen Books when I was a kid. I remember tugging on
moms leg while begging for a Magic Pen Book. It didn't even matter what
kind of book it was, all that mattered was that it was Magic Pen.
What Is a Magic Pen Book:
Magic Pen Books are slim coloring books that come with about 15 to 20
pages of drawings. On the drawings are textured x's that you run the
magic pen across. When you run the magic pen across the picture a color
magically appears right before your eyes.
I had completely forgotten about Magic Pen Books until recently while
over at my sisters house, I saw a Disney Princess Invisible Ink Magic
Pen Book sitting on the coffee table. I knew right away that it was a
Magic Pen Book, only because the purple magic marker was sitting right
next to the book.
I didn't even ask to use it. I went right ahead popped the top off of
the large magic pen and choose a page to color. I ended up finishing a
picture of Ariel from The Little Mermaid that my niece had started
coloring, yet never finished. I figured at least if I didn't ask to use
it, I wasn't starting a new fresh page.
How It Works:
It's as simple as pie. You just choose an area to color, run the magic
pen along the area and a color will appear. If you accidentally run
into another section of coloring it does not matter, because there are
no mistakes with magic pens.
I ran my pen across Ariel's hair and the magic pen automatically began
painting her hair a light pink color. Not quite what Ariel's hair color
is...but hey it was still cool. I then ran the pen across her fins, and
magically the color green appeared.
It seems though that the entire picture is made up of only 5 colors.
Pink, green, blue, dark blueish purple, and yellow. I remembered Magic
Pen Books being like this since they first hit shelves though. There is
really no large variety of colors that appear when you color with the
magic pen.
For me though, I was more than okay with that as a kid. An issue in my
adult years, was not one then, so I cannot complain seeing how the
Magic Pen Books are made with children in mind. So if they don't care
about assorted colors, then I shouldn't.
Major Issue:
There has always been an issue that I had with Magic Pen Books though,
and the issue has yet to be resolved even after all of these years. The
Magic Pen runs out way too fast, and the pen is dry by the time you get
through half of the book. I remember this pissing me off when I was a
wee one, so I am sure that my niece would be pissed as soon as she
discovered that the pens ink does not last that long at all.
You have to remember though, they will be coloring in at least 15
pages with just one marker. Although the market is big, 15 pages is a
big job for just one marker.
I wished that they would of included a second pen, but they don't, and
odds are they have no intentions to ever add a second pen. They should
at least sell the pen separately for a lower price if they are not going
to include one.
The Disney Princess Magic Pen Book:
There are tons of different Magic Pen Books you can purchase for your
children. I have seen Spiderman recently, Disney's Cars, Shrek, Zoo
Themed, Farm Themed, and Country Themed Magic Pen Books on shelves.
There are so many more though, but I could be here all day trying to
name them all.
In the Disney Princess Magic Book expect to find pages that will
include Belle, Ariel, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and other
princesses from Disney classics.
Overall Impression:
Although Magic Pen books have their issues, the books still manage to
keep young children busy for hours, and for a mere $2.50 you really
can't go wrong with them. I recommend the Disney Princess Magic Pen Book
to little girls who cannot get enough of them. The Magic Pen Books also
give young children a sense of pride when they complete a perfect
colored picture. As I mentioned before, there are no errors when it
comes to Magic Pen Books. Colors will not run out of lines, and children
who still scribble will even create perfect masterpieces.
Magic Pen Books were a favorite when I was a kid, and still continue to amaze and please kids today.
Where To Find The Disney Princess Magic Pen Book:
You can pick this book up at any local CVS or Eckerd's in the childrens section. I have also located it online for those who cannot get to one.
