I've always been a sucker for creepy DVD case covers. Teachers
have told me since childhood that I should never judge a book by its
cover. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I've been told that, I
still, to this day, judge everything by the cover. Books, DVD's,
magazines and even products.
When I came across the DVD Dorothy Mills I was intrigued by the creepy
looking child on the cover. She had blond hair, bloodshot blue eyes,
and a look of pure evil written in her expression.
Besides the creepy looking kid, there was also one captivating line written on the case that absolutely sold me. It stated "A Contemporary Take on The Exorcist".
How could one deny such a bold statement? I couldn't. I scooped that DVD up like it was the last one on earth, and rushed home to get my gore on.
Dorothy Mills starts off in an unusual manner, and I was not fully aware of what was going on till about 10 minutes into the flick.
It turned out this young girl Dorothy Mills was accused of trying to kill a baby that she was sitting for.
Jane Morton is a psychiatrist who is sent to Dorothy's small Irish island. It is her job to try and understand what happened, and to hopefully help Dorothy try and avoid a harsh punishment from the courts for what she had done.
Immediately you know something is wrong with this kid, and at first while watching the flick unfold I was led to believe that Dorothy was suffering from multiple personality disorder because at one point she would begin to play the role of a very young child. Her voice changed, her whole disposition changed.
However as quickly as she acted out the part of a child, she would suddenly change into some wicked angry demonic like personality.
I thought the kid was possessed. Home to multiple spirits; some good and some bad.
I figured the flick would include the calling of priests to exercise the demons, but the events that unfolded were least expected, which made the movie really damn good.
You see Dorothy Mills channels the dead, and sometimes the dead have unfinished business. Dorothy is their puppet, and even though that may sound wicked, evil, and demonic...sometimes the dead have unfinished business, but for damn good reasons.
Dorothy Mills was completely captivating, and honestly I was expecting some cheesy B rated horror flick, and what unfolded was an excellent, excellent psychological thriller/ghost tale.
Now I have come across many bad reviews on Dorothy Mills, but honestly I have to highly disagree.
The movie has a creepy feeling from the get go, with a similar vibe that I had gotten when I first watched 'The Ring', a dark foggy atmosphere, with an odd sense of something horrific torments your thoughts at every turn. Dorothy Mills kept me on my toes, and frankly it's one of the best flicks I have seen in the horror genre for quite some time.
Seriously how many slasher films can one watch before the crap just gets boring?
I guess for some, an eternity worth of slasher gore is all they really want. However when a flick comes along and thinks outside of the box, it becomes a memorable one, and Dorothy Mills is just that. For some unfortunately, it failed. For others such as myself, Dorothy Mills is sure to impress.
Dorothy Mills gets a solid 5 star rating from me, and I highly recommend it.
