When I read the brief description on my TV's guide stating that the movie It Waits was about a group of archeologist's who release a demon from a cave, it sounded pretty damn good.
I have always had a love for horror movies, so naturally I tuned in. I
was hoping the flick would deliver a good scare, or a good
plot...something worthy of being dubbed a horror movie.
It Waits though started off just about as lame as a horror movie could.
You have your group of archeologist's, and they blow a hole in a cave
to explore inside. Once inside though they hear weird growling noises.
Obviously they awoke the demon that had been lurking...or sleeping... or
stuck inside?
Next the movie jumps to a fluffy haired girl named Danielle getting
drunk inside this rangers tower while having flashbacks of some sort of
car accident that involved her, and her lush of a friend.
Meanwhile a bird keeps talking in the background 'Julie loves you... Julie loves you'.
It makes it pretty obvious that something happened to this Julie
character and apparently Danielle feels guilty about it. Or she is sad?
You really are not sure at this point.
After Danielle's drunken stupor and her boring flashbacks another
ranger joins her at her watchtower.
His name is Justin, and evidently
the two have history and are dating...yet they are sort of on a break?
You don't really know though, as you are forced to just assume. Not
long after Justin's arrival they have sex and the demon from the cave
makes its presence known.
It pushes Justin's car over, and manages to rip apart any means of communication from the tower.
The next 45 minutes of the flick is nothing more than Danielle running
around the woods, or locking herself in a room in the watchtower with a
gun, as the demon stalks her.
The worst part about the flick though is the lack of emotion. If some
demon were chasing after me, I'd not be able to remain as calm as
Danielle did. Not only that though, if something were killing everyone
around me, and leaving the bodies out for me to find I would freak the
hell out. Danielle though... she does not even break a sweat.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any frigging worse, Danielle meets
up with some Indian guy in the middle of the woods who claimed to be
watching the whole demon thing go down from across the river, and in the
middle of her battle with this demon he tells her the story behind the
demon. The story was pathetic and for some reason, in the middle of the
movie... they felt it was necessary to add this collected, calm, and
cool Indian guy to tell Danielle the story of the demon.
Instead of joining forces with him (hello, battling a demon with a team mate would be a hell of a lot easier than taking off and leaving him behind)
and coming up with a solution to get rid of the demon TOGETHER,
Danielle acts like she is this cool bad ass by walking away and making
her way back to her watchtower.
After this odd encounter, the rest of the movie is the same as the
first scene when the demon made its debut. It chases Danielle, she
shoots at it. It chases her, she shoots again.
Fear not though, back home she has this Macaw who can sense when the
demon is coming, and it will squawk out to warn Danielle whenever the
demon is lurking around the watchtower.
Without ruining the ending, I may as well add in my two cents.
It Waits was probably the worst demon in the forest flick I have seen
in a long time. There was absolutely no build up, the character's had
blank lifeless expressions in times where they should have been
terrified, there were no emotions, and add in character's (the lost
couple who went hiking) made no sense. Danielle's flashbacks also seemed
to be thrown in there for absolutely no reason, and a talking bird that
can sense and warn when the demon was coming - come on!?
Seriously, It Waits couldn't have been done more poorly than it was.
