As a kid, at any given time you could fine me sprawled on the floor with
my enormous collection of Lego's. With my Lego's I could build a house,
a boat or a castle for a king. My imagination would run wild, and hours
and hours of play time would be put into my Lego's.
However, as soon as a became a teen, whipping out Lego's not only made
people around me look at me like there was something wrong, but I felt
sort of stupid playing with them even though I knew deep down they were
hellacool.
Lego's though are back in my life, and this time I don't feel as
'weird' playing with them in my older age. The first video game I ever
played that involved Lego's, was an Indiana Jones based Lego video game
for the PS3.
I loved it, and beat the game in around a week.
As soon as I discovered Lego Batman would be the newest addition to
the Lego saga, I didn't hesitate for a second to pick up the title.
Lego Batman covers 3 separate story's where Batman and Robin tag team
together to fight crime. You will come head to head with Penguin, Cat
Woman, and numerous other villains in the Batman story. Of course your
final battle is with the Joker.
Besides playing the Batman hero story line, there is also a separate
area for you to enter where you can play as the villain. I loved the
addition because it adds even more game play to the game.
I personally was never a die hard fan of Batman. I was more of a
Superman fan, but I will say that playing this game managed to turn me
into a fan.
The worlds that I came across were all fun, the graphics were pretty,
and best of all. every once and a while I got to build objects to use in
the game. Although I had no control over what objects were built, the
charming sounds of the Lego blocks coming together were exciting enough.
In some levels I got to cruise through the waters in a huge Bat-mobile
type watercraft, in other areas I'd be on foot, but had the ability to
glide from platform to platform with my trusty Bat Cape. Other levels I
would be flying a Bat Copter, riding on elephants, or blowing things up
with my Bat Bombs.
All in all the adventure was a hell of a lot of fun.
In each level you can collect things in order to make a completed
object at the end of the board, and you also are given a score depending
on how well you did in that particular completed level.
The fun thing about it though is that even when you are done with the
game, odds are you will have to re-visit that level in order to collect
objects you may have missed previously. Basically the re-play value is
there, and that's why this game is definitely worthy of purchasing, than
it is renting it.
Graphics:
The graphics follow the same charming look that all of the Lego
console games have followed. Nice looking lads, with plenty of Lego
objects. It's like combining a normal environment with a Lego
environment. The mix is cute and fitting to the game.
In between each level you beat, there will also play a funny little
skit so you get a better understanding into what is to come in the next
level.
The small skits are fun, and if you pay attention are pretty humorous.
Unfortunately though you have to pay attention because the Lego
characters do not talk. They mumble and make weird quirky sounds. If you
pay attention though it's pretty simple to figure out what's going on.
Music:
The music plays in he background and is not distracting to the game.
The sounds you will hear all are fitting to Batman, and to Lego's at the
same time.
2 Players:
I played this game start to finish with my boyfriend. I was Batman and
he was Robin. Although the game was all the more fun when playing with a
sidekick, it did manage to run into some glitches. If I roamed to one
end of the level, and he stood behind, sometimes a glitch would occur as
to where we couldn't move. We actually had to reset the game at one
point during an irreversible glitch.
The glitches though in the game are far and wide, but annoying nonetheless.
Another glitch we encountered on the brand new game was a sudden
freeze on board 3, story 1. The game for no reason at all just stopped
working. We had to reset the game and start the board over again. It
only happened once, but was annoying enough to stick out in my memory
vault.
Game play:
The game itself is pretty simple, and when your character dies, they
simply wake back up to life in the exact spot where you croaked. It
makes game play simple, yet fun, especially for younger children who
cannot stand starting a level over after they die.
The controls are also very simple to understand, and in seconds I was
able to understand the function of every button. The O button allows you
to grab, or build objects, which you will be doing a lot of in this
game. Everything else is pretty straight forward.
Overall:
Lego Batman was a joy to play. I still have a few missions left in
villain mode, and a few objects to go back and collect before my game is
complete.
All in all Lego Batman is a definite fun game, to play alone, or to play with another person.
I picked the game up at a SONY outlet for $59.99, but you can likely
find this title for less online. It is definitely worth a buy.
