Movie Review: Surfs Up

Cody has always been an under achiever. His whole life he has felt as if he had never accomplished anything good, and most of his family, and penguins in town view him as a lazy free loading bum that does not do anything but surf on his free time. Cody though has such a deep love for the sport, that he is willing to ignore all comments that are thrown at him.
When Cody learns that a surfing scout is in town he jumps at the opportunity to hopefully be picked up to join in the Big Z Memorial Surf Contest. Big Z has always been his favorite surfer, and when Cody was just a young penguin Big Z gave him his necklace, a piece of jewelry Cody has kept around his neck since he received it.
Big Z though, died during his last surf competition against Tank, an up and coming pro surfer. Cody was ecstatic to compete in the competition with Big Z's memory in mind, but Cody also wanted an escape from Shiverpool (his hometown in Antarctica), and he knew that if the scout brought him along to compete, it would be like receiving a free ticket out of Shiverpool, to do what he loves doing best; surf.
While trying to impress the surf scout though, things do not go as planned for Cody, and his chances to compete in the competition are nearly blown due to the fact that there was not a wave in sight for him to ride to impress the scout.
Does Cody ever get the chance to compete in the contest? Does the surfing penguin win the contest? Does the under dog make it to the top?
Surfs Up was an extremely fast paced movie, and I enjoyed each and every minute of it. The movie is done up in a computer animated film, and is done up in a documentary type style which really gave it a unique perspective that I have yet to see come from a computer animated film.
The visuals are beautiful, and I don't have a high definition television set. Some of the scenes were done up so realistic that I honestly caught myself wondering if some of the penguins were men in penguin costumes. The visuals for the most part is what drew me in in the beginning of Surfs Up.
Some actors voices you will hear in Surfs Up belong to Jeff Bridges, Jon Heder, Kelly Slater, James Wood and many more.
I haven't liked a computer animated this much since I watched Toy Story. Surf's Up is not only a fantastic movie, but it is also a work of art. In some scenes, you, as a viewer will feel as if you are in the wave. It's really a gorgeous believable film; even with penguins as the main characters.
Recommendation:
I recommend Surf's Up to anyone and everyone. The film is going to be a sure pleaser for younger children, and adults alike. I can't put an age recommendation on Surf's Up, because it's a film that will attract the young and old.
There has not been a surf documentary done in quite some time, and Surfs Up; although it's computer animated, is definitely a must have film for those who love the sport.
Overall:
I enjoyed Surf's Up a lot, and it's a film that I would pop into the DVD player time and time again.
