Blu-ray Movie Review: Nim's Island

The blu-ray box cover of Nim's Island sold me before I even knew what this movie was about. Abigail Breslin looking like an adorable modern day mini pirate, with a gorgeous turquoise sea in the background behind her, with animals from land and sea surrounding her...heck it looked like the tropical vacation I had always wanted to be on, the adventure I always yearned for... all crammed onto a freaking blu-ray box cover.

Without even knowing the plot, I grabbed Nim's Island for a rent to see what the movie had to offer. Featuring Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster, and Gerard Butler, I knew this movie would have a twist of adventure and seriousness all rolled into one.

I was right, Nim's Island was in fact just that, and more. Filled with fun, comedy, action and adventure, let's me set the sail and prepare you for Nim's Island.

Plot:

Nim and her father live isolated on an island that her father had discovered a few years ago. The island is their best kept secret, and it is also their home. The two want to keep it that way. They do not want anyone else knowing about their island.

Nim's father who is a scientist is always on the look out for new algae and species in the water. When he sets sail to seek out a new specie Nim stays behind because an island turtles eggs are about to hatch, and she wants to make sure she catches the babies to make sure they are safe from predators in the sea before they are released.

Nim's father though gets caught in a storm and becomes stranded at sea.

While her father is gone, Nim's Island is visited by a cruise ship, which will be returning to the island in 2 more days filled with tourists. On top of that disaster Nim has also taken a fall recently which gashed her leg open.

With her father missing, Nim turns to her all time favorite hero, Alex Rover. Alex Rover is a brave adventurer in books she reads. Nim begs Alex Rover to come to the island to help her protect it from the tourists, and to help her find her father who is lost at sea.

When Alex realized that her hero is actually a female, she is more than disappointed and feels all hope is lost when she realizes that the real Alex Rover is pretty useless when it comes to being a hero.

All in all Nim's Island was a cute adventure filled with fun, adventure, surprises, and some parts that will leave you feeling pretty sad. Other scenes in the movie however were a bit jumpy and some things were left unanswered, which did indeed make room for a Nim's Island 2.

Some scenes in the movie did though bother me, particularly when Nim meets another boy her age. It makes you feel sorry for her, that she has never come across other children, and that her only social interaction comes from her father. It more or less makes you think that this is not Nim's Island, but instead Nim's Prison.

Another thing in the movie that does not make sense is the fact that Nim and her father want to keep the island a secret...yet Nim's father writes an article about it in National Geographic.

Another issue that boggled my mind was the fact that Alex Rover went to Nim's Island to help Nim with her cut, to help her with the overrun of tourists and to help her find her father... yet neither of the three occur. Alex never bothers to look at Nim's cut. Nim took care of the tourists on her own... and her father well... I won't spoil that for you.

With that aside though, the movie was fun nonetheless. Jumpy, sketchy, but still very fun.

I would recommend Nim's Island to families with young children. If you do not over think certain scenes the movie is not half bad. A cutesy fun adventure for the whole family.

Blu-ray:

Not all Blu-rays are created alike, so I figured I may as well mention picture quality when played on Blu-ray.

Nim's Island was gorgeous. Even with a mild sketchy plot, Nim's Island is so beautiful on Blu-ray that you are willing to forgive the flick for some scene wreckage.

Water looks more beautiful than it would in real life. Computer generated animals look realistic, and everything is very colorful and draws you in. Underwater scenes in particular will definitely impress you. The island is so vivid on blu-ray you will feel as if you are there, running through the white sand beach with Nim.

Overall Rate:

3 stars out of 5 in my opinion.
