Can of Worms: Kid's Movie Review

Normally, I enjoy sitting down to a good kid's movie. I loved Shrek, Garfield and Goosebumps. Whenever I have nothing saved on my DVR, I go searching around for flicks I think I would like watching whenever there is nothing else on. This was how Can of Worms landed an 88-minute slot on my DVR this past week.

Cable's brief description of the movie sounded okay, so I figured why not?

Can of Worms is about a teen by the name of Mike Pillsbury who is obsessed with computers, gadgets, and any other odd electronic he can get his hands on. He is also obsessed with aliens, and other planets, so much so that he truly believes that he may be an alien from another planet. Mainly though this feeling of his is brought on because he feels like such an outsider at school.

Knowing Mike's excessive knowledge in working with electronics, Katelyn (who is also Mike's secret crush) asks him to help her out with doing the light show for the schools upcoming dance.

When the show is ruined due to Scott (Mike's #1 tormentor), Mike gets upset, and ends up going home.

Here he attempts to contact aliens by using some satellite dish and computer hook up in his back yard.

The show is now born. Aliens from some other planet come through some hole that Mike opened.

Basically he opens a can of worms that was never meant to be open.

Now with a talking dog who is really an alien, his new friend Katelyn, and oddly enough his tormentor Scott, he sets out to save the world from becoming overrun by some evil alien.

My Feelings:

Terrible! Mike who is the main character never seems convincing or believable in any line he delivers. Even in moments where fear should be taking place, he seems relaxed.

I think the best lines delivered were by Katelyn, and Mike's friends little brother.

The aliens in the flick are colorful and cute looking, but overall even the most evil looking alien was too 'friendly' looking. So friendly looking that being overrun by such a creature wouldn't really scare anyone. I understand that Can of Worms is geared at young children, but I think kids can handle a semi scary looking monster, instead of one that looks like a friendly baked frog.

Mainly though Can of Worms is boring. There is no real action, the dialog is extremely boring, the main characters are not believable, and by the time you are 30 minutes into the movie you are wishing it would just end already.

One final complaint is that I am highly, highly getting sick of seeing movies on the Disney channel where the main characters have an extreme and obvious lisp!? Can they not find actors without lisp? I'm noticing a non-stop ongoing pattern, and it's really bizarre.

Overall:

Skip it, skip it... doo wop wopin and a dooo wop wop!

Normally I give star ratings to movies at the end of my review, but Can of Worms is so bad, that I honestly wouldn't even grant it a 1 star rating.
