I've come across quite a few different movies ad book titled Fat Girl,
or Fat Girls. Most of these things I have come across always offered
some sort of miserable story dealing with a fat girl, and how that fat
girl has to combat day to day ridicule from their peers.
When I saw Fat Girls on Blockbuster.com, I added the movie to my Que
not really knowing what it would be about. I had a good hunch though
that it was about fat girls.
I was wrong.
Fat Girls primarily focuses on a young gay man named Rodney Miller. He
is not fat, nor is he super skinny. He is gay. He however refers to
himself as a fat girl. Basically a high school outcast, and misfit.
The movie really does not have this plot that it follows scene by
scene, nor does it really have a point. To better put it, for me, Fat
Girls was a new twist on Napoleon Dynamite, only this one is about a gay
kid.
Rodney needs a date for the graduation dance, so he decides to ask
this new European hottie Joe to be his date. Joe accepts his invitation.
Before the dance though Joey decides to get to know Rodney a little
better by inviting him along to a gay bar. Here at the bar Rodney learns
that his teacher (oddly enough the teachers first name is Seymour... his last name Cox) Mr. Cox dresses up as a woman and puts on a dancing and singing act at this pub.
Meanwhile Rodney's plus sized gal (who is the daughter of two lesbians)
pal also has found herself a new love interest, and as if the stars
were aligned correctly, he likes her too. You will even catch these two
in a sexual scene that is downright disturbing and funny all the same.
You won't see any nudity in this scene though. Trust me, that is a good thing.
Now the two misfits have dates to the dance! Hooray!!! Like in
Napoleon Dynamite though, the dance is not all it is cut out to be, and
the movie ends on a bizarre unfinished note that I will not ruin for
you.
My Feelings:
Not once was I uncomfortable with gay sexuality that will be presented
to you in many scenes in the movie. You will see a few butts, but
anything sexual is cut from the scene. If gay sexuality however makes
you squeamish than I suggest you steer clear of this one, because there
will be a ton of references to blow jobs and hand jobs, again though,
you don't actually see this happen.
Fat Girls was pretty humorous during some parts, and oddly enough the
movie was not half bad. It could have been far worse. The comical scenes
were funny and offered a true hearty laugh, yet when strange oddball
scenes popped up they were indeed strange and out of the ordinary, some I
would even label as borderline shocking.
All in all Fat Girls is worth a rent. However, like I said if homosexuality makes you uncomfortable than simply skip it.
I'd slap 3 stars out of 5 onto Fat Girls.
