Recap: Tales from the Darkside, Season 1, a Case of the Stubborns

I've been a fan of The Tales From The Darkside series since I was a kid. Sadly though, the series stopped airing on televising for quite a few years. Episodes I missed, were buried in the time capsule of TV flicks that went unforgotten.

Lately though, the series has been playing on TV these past few months. Far be it for me to pass up catching old missed shows.

One show that I never got the opportunity to catch when I was younger was A Case Of The Stubborns; season 1.

When the show first began I was shocked to see itty bitty Christian Slater playing Jody, the young boy who's Grandfather had just died.

As his mother and he are discussing/mourning their dead grandfather/father over breakfast, the old man suddenly creeps into the room, slumps down on a chair, and asks, "what's for breakfast."

Although this particular scene would scare the hell out of most, Jody (Christian Slater) and his mother don't seem all too shocked by it. Knowing he is a very stubborn man, it comes as no surprise that Grandpa refuses to even believe he is dead.

Jody and his Mom keep telling Grandpa that he is dead, but he refuses to believe them because he is awake, feeling fine, and wonders why everyone keeps saying that he is dead.

After a few hours pass Grandpa begins to take on different appearances and everyone in the house starts complaining about 'this smell', because he is slowly rotting.

After Grandpa refuses to accept that he is dead, Jody then seeks information on how to put the dead back to sleep, and tries to find a way to prove to his Grandpa that he is in fact dead. He knows if he is able to prove to Grandpa that he is dead, maybe Grandpa will rest in peace.

I won't give away the ending of the show, but I will say it was a rather good ending.

The entire 30 minute airing of A Case Of The Stubborns was odd, but at the same time humorous. I found myself laughing, and at the same time feeling sorry for the old man who refused to die. All together though, this particular show was pretty decent compared to others in the series.

Actors:

The actors/actress' in A Case Of The Stubborns played their parts really well, and were all very believable. Some did better jobs then others, but overall everyone did a great job at acting out their characters.

I especially loved Grandpa played by (Eddie Bracken). Although you could clearly tell that it was a young guy in costume, he did a humorous job at acting out being an old stiff.

The makeup in the film was also very creative. Although you could seriously tell that Grandpa was done up in tons of prosthetics and makeup, it still looked gnarly, especially when his appearance took on the rotten look.

I'd rate A Case If The Stubborns a 4 out of 5 stars. Minus one star for the over acting portrayed by some of the actors in certain scenes.
