This past weekend I found myself browsing my local Blockbuster for yet
another flick to kill some time before bed that night. Nothing really
caught my eye till I came across a DVD with a picture of a girl who
looked just like my newest favorite teen star, Selena Gomez!
Once I got a closer look, it turned out the look alike was not a look
alike at all, but it was the actual Selena Gomez! Just when I thought I
had seen everything this new actress starred in, out comes a new flick!
Another Cinderella Story:
Quickly on in the movie you learn that Mary (Selena Gomez) is taking
on a modern day role of the original fairy tale princess Cinderella.
Instead of big fluffy blue ball gowns, we are given a more punk and pop
version of the beloved fairytale.
Mary's mother was once a dancer in Dominique Blatt's music videos,
however when she dies, she left behind her daughter Mary. Dominique
decided to take Mary in to use her as her own personal little slave.
Mary pretty much runs the household, and goes through daily rituals of
ridiculous chores left by Dominique, and her wicked daughters.
Mary though does not have a magic pumpkin ride, or a snazzy glass
slipper to help her in her quest to doing what she loves most; she has
one gift though, and that is dancing.
Anyhow, Joey Parker is a past resident at Mary's school who grew up to
become a famous singer and dancer, and he comes to the realization that
he wants to go back to school.
As soon as everyone hears Joey is coming back all of the girls go into
this crazed frenzy because not only is he coming back to school, but he
is also going to be holding a dance competition to find a backup dancer
for his new music video.
During a ballroom dance the students are to dress up wearing a mask.
Here Joey meets Mary and the two dance together. Joey falls in instant
love with this dancing queen, only he does not know her real identity
(you'd have to be slightly brain dead not to know who was behind the
small Phantom of the Opera type masks though) due to the mask, and when
she runs away leaving no trace of her identity behind, besides a Zune.
(ipod type gadget) He has no choice but to track her down based on the
playlist.
You get where this is going?
By the brief plot I've already given, it's really no surprise what happens next.
My Feelings:
Blah.
Don't get me wrong, I adore Selena Gomez, but seriously this
one was lacking flair and connection. It threw me off when Joey
discovered who his mystery dance partner was because he barely even
acted like he cared. The whole scene was just lacking that eye twinkle,
that emotional connection; that 'I've found my princess' reaction.
Dominique who played the modern day wicked step mother, was not wicked
enough. In my opinion she seemed to be under some drug induced state
that made her more funny and floozy, than wicked and scary.
The wicked sisters were just dorks. One being a mega brace face dork, and the other a plain ditsy bimbo.
I also found some of the dance scenes in particular to be a little
'too sexy' for younger audiences even though this flick is geared at
younger audiences.
Overall:
Although Another Cinderella Story is not a movie I would
personally add to my collection of DVD's it's not the most horrendous
movie I've ever seen, and those who are fans of Selena Gomez will likely
enjoy it.
From me though, I'd slap it with a 2 star rating, out of 5.
