When I first got glimpse of catacombs on Blockbuster.com I didn't
really hesitate to add the movie to my Que. The catacombs in general
have always interested me. A mass graveyard underneath the city of
Paris...how can one not be intrigued?
I had no clue who would be starring in the flick when I added it to my
Que though, once I popped the DVD into my player though I realized that
the main characters were faces I have seen before. Shannon Sossamo for
instance plays as Victoria, the quite, shy borderline boring gal who is
taking her first trip to Paris to visit her sister Carolyn, whom is
played by Pink.
I wasn't sure how well this one would go over, but I continued watching nonetheless.
As soon as Victoria settles in with her sister, she is invited to some huge underground party that will be taking place in the catacombs.
The flick started off pretty promising with, but as it went on it got more and more bothersome. Victoria in particular is just straight up boring. At first she has a mysterious semi sexy vibe to her, but a little more into the movie you come to realize shes simply put, a bore.
Anyhow the party is pumping, its loud, and the sound in particular on the DVD just annoyed the crap out of me. One point the actors were in a frigging whisper and you couldn't hear a goddamn thing, and a few seconds later my speakers are nearly blowing out the tube due to the noise level in the rave room.
Victoria becomes aware of a local legend/story about a crazy killer who was born and then imprisoned in the catacombs. The guy is considered pure evil, incredibly strong, and every other bad thing you can think of. Sounds pretty scary, especially when you get glimpses of this half man half crazed beast creature that lives in the catacombs as the legend of him is being discussed.
Next thing we know, Victoria decides to leave the party and find her way out of the catacombs on her own. As she begins her tour to exit her sister Carolyn catches up to her to try and convince her to let loose and join the party again. But uh oh.... Carolyn is quickly grabbed away by the killer!!!! Dun dun dunnnnn!!!!!
The rest of the movie is basically a girl running for her life down hallways filled with bones, twists and turns, a grave of a maze!!! With each turn she takes she is always one step ahead of the killer.
Now it wouldn't have been so horrible had the picture not been so damn messy. There were some points in the movie where all you heard was breathing, due to the fact that everything is pretty much black down in the catacombs. Once in awhile a flashlight would go on, or an overhead light, but seriously I think they could of done a hell of a lot better job with lighting then what we get.
After the twists and turns of black mazes, wrong turns, dead ends, and areas that seem like they take Victoria in circles, you get bored. There is a lot of running, whimpering, and screaming going on in the flick... some of it you actually get to see, some of it, you only will hear.
Just when you think the movie is about to come to an end, Victoria runs around some more.
The end though delivers a wanna be shock to the audience that could actually of been decent, had the bad acting and dialog not been presented in the way it was.
Overall Catacombs was a flick that could have been good, had they chosen better actors, and gave us a closer look at what was actually going on, instead of blackness and bad lighting which is nearly 90% of the entire movie.
Sorry, this one was a flop for me.
