When I added Girl Most Likely To...(written by Joan Rivers- 1973) to my que on www.blockbuster.com and I had no idea that Stockard Channing would be the main character in the movie.
Score!
I'm sure all of you know her from the hit musical Grease; she played the Pinks leader, Rizzo.
I was amazed at first when the movie started at just how young she was in 'Girl Most Likely To...'. She must have been no older than 18 or 19.
Anyways she played the frumpy and ugly misfit Miriam Knight.
Who Is Miriam?
Miriam is a young woman entering college for the 5th time (she
couldn't withstand the torment and teasing from her peers in the other
schools, so constantly she is on the move enrolling in school after
school) and not really for the education. Miriam is in college not to learn, Miriam is looking for 'a man'.
But with a mug as ugly as hers she is in for some major disappointments during her 'love' quest.
What, She Has a Boyfriend Already!?!
Well not quite.
Even though Miriam's family has pretty much told her that she is to
marry her father's business partner's son, he does not want to marry
her. (Can't say I don't blame him) As a matter of fact every time
he meets with her he is downright mean and cruel to her. So Miriam
figures maybe in this school she will find a man to love and understand
her. A real man!
Miriam is roomed with an extremely beautiful blond bombshell, and at
first you are fooled into thinking that perhaps this would become
another reason for Miriam to switch schools. Pretty girl is mean to ugly
girl. This wasn't the case though.
When the blond gets a phone call come in from a guy she wants nothing
to do with. The man asks Miriam to come meet him down at the pool house
instead. She has a sexy voice over the phone, so he wants to meet her.
When Miriam arrives the young man tries pretending he is someone else.
She knows better though and insists on staying with him and his
friends, up until they ditch her.
Miriam next meets a doctor who shows interest in her. He fools her
into thinking she is beautiful, all to try and get her to put out while
all of his colleagues watch from a room above them.
However as the movie progresses and Miriam gets the part in a school
play, the blond bombshell shows her true evil colors to Miriam, she is
angry because she wanted the part.
When things go terribly wrong at the play Miriam flees, and gets into a
car accident. The scene cuts and you are taken to the hospital where
her entire face is covered in gauze. The doctors remove the gauze and
Miriam is ...
Can you guess what has happened to Miriam's ugly face? I'm not going to tell you, and ruin it.
What exactly has happened to her face that sends her out on a comical revenge spree against all of her tormentors?
Does Miriam ever find love, even while she's out on a vengeful killing spree?
My Thoughts:
In the beginning I really felt bad for her and by the middle of the movie I was busting out in laughter.
For the time the movie was made they did a great job with make-up to
make Miriam look downright ugly and I honesty thought that this was how
ugly Stockard Channing was when she was younger. I have to say the
make-up artist did this movie justice and really had me fooled.
Also the actors all did a pretty good job, not once did any of the
main characters seem unbelievable and untrue to their parts. Some of
them even are stars we know quite well now, and seeing them in roles
when they were young is always a fun treat.
What I Disliked:
There was one scene where Miriam met a doctor who fooled her into
thinking he was in love with her as I mentioned earlier. How he almost
got her to put out while his co-workers watched. This particular scene
just sickened me.
Times have changed, any doctor like this would be fired and put in
jail and make the news for such acts, so it was odd for me to watch as
she sort of just allowed what happened without alerting the police. This
is why I would recommend this movie to older teens and adults.
The Cast:
Stockard Channing, Ed Asner, Larry Wilcox, Mary Layne, Angela Clarke,
Warren Burton, Cyril Delevanti, Dan Spelling, Florence London, Florence
Lake, Victor Izay, Bob Hanley, Ruth McDevitt, Annette O'Toole, Charles
Pinte, Lonny Stevens, and Bill Zuckert.
Overall:
'Girl Most Likely To...' is a fun and entertaining way
to wither away 73 minutes. It's a great nostalgic piece of 70's movie
history that anyone would enjoy. Plus, the acting is pretty good for its
time. I'm also assuming many folks don't know this one is available,
but it is, and you can find it on DVD now.
