Night of the Living Dorks was staring back at me on the shelf while I browsed blockbuster's walls helplessly searching for a good horror flick.
Turned out there was not a single flick in seeing how Halloween was
right around the corner, and every Tom, Dick and Harry hit up the horror
section, so I figured I would settle for something humorous yet with a
mini dash of horror, and this is why I brought this movie home with me.
Night of the Living Dorks is about; well, dorks, 3 of them to be precise, one dork named Philip has a wild obsession with the most beautiful and popular girl in school, another dork called Weener smokes pot all day and drools over his much older school teacher, and the final dork Konrad... well I couldn't figure out what he brought to the movie. He was the glasses wearing mega dork.
Night of the Living Dorks is a German movie, but the English voice-overs were pretty good, and when your 5 minutes into the movie you don't even realize that their mouth movements aren't matching up to their voices. (Yep it's Godzilla gone modern)
Anyways Philip's next-door neighbor is into voodoo, and voodoo rituals and all that satanic stuff, so when he learns that she may be able to help him put a love spell on the girl of his dreams he sets up to meet with her in the local graveyard. Along with him comes his dork squad Weener, and Konrad. These dorks travel together at all times.
In the middle of the ritual things go wrong when the ashes of a demon are sprayed all on the dorks, instead of in the altar bowl. This is where the movie begins for the most part.
So two minutes later as they all head home the three of them die in a car accident thanks to the pot-smoking dork Weener. They are not dead though. They have all come back as zombies!
It takes them a few moments to grasp the whole idea of being zombies, but soon enough they bask in the limelight when they realize being a zombie isn't such a bad thing after all.
They now have superhuman strength and are able to fight back to those who once bullied them. Their new powers grant them aces into the cool club, and the dorks are no longer dorks. They are cool.
During this whole 'cool with the school' stage Philip gets the girl of his dreams while breaking the heart of his neighbor who has had a crush on him for years.
In order to go back to normal the three have a limited amount of time to make a secret potion they must drink. However with no skills at voodoo magic Philip must find his neighbor to help him, which proves not such an easy task seeing how he has ditched her on more than one account to 'be cool'.
That's pretty much the movie without running the ending.
What I Liked Most:
Well even though the horror in the movie was far from scary it was pretty funny, and I found myself laughing quite a few times while watching it.
Basically that was the aim for Night of the Living Zombies, to be funny, and for me it passed with some pretty comical scenes.
The actors themselves are what made the movie good as well. Even with a cheesy plot they all acted their parts and seemed believable. I was honestly expecting some pathetic acting to go along with such a ridiculous title, but I was surprised with some decent acting.
I also like the fact that this movie was made with English voice over and not annoying subtitles (which I hate).
What I Didn't Like:
Well the make-up wasn't really up to today's standards. I mean I know zombies are not the scariest looking ghouls in the movie industry but they could have done a little more than just white powder and dark circles for eyes.
Another issue I had with the make-up is that everyone in school suddenly found them cool because of their superhuman strength, yet not a single person noticed that they looked a little funky. I mean they were all pale white, with enormous dark circles around their eyes, yet no one bothered to mention it, or say 'Are you okay? You look sick?'
Age Recommendation:
Night of the Living Zombies is geared more towards teenagers and young adults, but I can honestly see adults in general enjoying it as well. There are some scenes where blood and guts are involved but it's nothing horrific or frightening. There are some sexual scenes so you will not want to show this one to younger children at all. Just a boobie shot and a rolling nut here and there, nothing drastic, but for those against it, Night of the Living Dorks is a skip.
Overall Opinion:
Night of the Living Dorks even though the title sounds lame, and the story line I just discussed may not sound super cool, it was actually a pretty good movie.
I'm not saying it was excellent, and as a matter of fact the whole concept of it is pretty cheesy, yet entertaining nonetheless.
Final Recommendation:
Yep Night of the Living Dorks passes with the 'Melissa Seal of Approval.'
It's a good movie that will offer you some hearty laughs even though the whole concept is cheesy; but that's what makes it fun.
NOTE-
Night of the Living Dorks runs 89 minutes long. (2004)
A MINI LANGUAGE LESSON-
Die Nacht der lebenden Loser = Night of the Living Dorks - in German.
