Review: The Onion Movie

The Onion Movie had some really promising commercials to promote the flick, so I of course went out in search of the movie at my local Blockbuster. Now at first I actually thought this movie was an actual movie, but it turns out, The Onion Movie is actually a collection of fake news delivered as boring comedy sketches, with a lame little plot thrown in between the sketches. 

 Basically you have a news-anchor man who delivers the news. This is the movies actual mini plot which takes place in the office, which is not very funny. The guy who delivers the news is pissed off that their parent site keeps on adding ridiculous advertising with a dancing computer generated penguin, that interrupt his news stories.

His news stories covers a range of sketches that are supposed to be funny, but actually come off as really boring, stupid, and straight up lame. Sketch comedy is being overdone nowadays, and for anything to be funny, they really have to think outside of the box when it comes to sketch comedy. The Onion Movie though keeps things generic, and tries way too hard to be funny, which makes it un-funny in the worst of ways.

A few sketches in particular will cause you too almost nearly giggle, but it just lacks that humor that will have you gut busting in laughter.

One particular sketch involves a man who is wearing a new neck belt, which was discontinued for causing heads to sever if you hit something with the car. In this sketch his head pops off and flies through his windshield. This particular sketch caused a slight giggle, but after that sketch which is seen in the beginning, everything just went downhill from there.

The Onion Movie features sketches involving a slap at Britney Spears, sex, rape, robbery, missing socks, racism, and other ridiculous short sketches that will seriously have you yawning.

All in all The Onion Movie is a lame attempt at sketch comedy, thrown in the mix a bland plot about a news anchor. It just fails to tickle the funny bone. Overall the movie is a bust, most sketch comedy's are busts though, so The Onion Movie fits right in there with the other boring sketch comedy flicks that have been delivered to us.

Truly it is just ashame, because the commercials promoting the movie were really great, once I got hold of the DVD though, I realized everything good about the movie were sketches that you see in the commercials, everything else just stunk.

Skip it, and enjoy the commercials that you will see on TV... the commercials do the movie justice, but the movie does not deliver what the promising promotions do.
